TALB Ratifies Agreements, School Board to Vote

Members of the Teachers Association of Long Beach have ratified tentative contract agreements for 2019-20 and 2020-21. As described in prior bargaining updates, the tentative agreements include ongoing, one-time and retroactive salary increases. The agreements are subject to approval by the Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education, which is tentatively scheduled to vote on the matter at its regular April 28 meeting.

TALB members in the K-12 unit approved the agreements with a yes vote of more than 81 percent, while Child Development Center/Head Start unit members approved by more than 93 percent.

Under the tentative agreements, TALB members would receive an ongoing salary increase of 1% for 2019-20, and an ongoing 2% increase for 2020-21. The 2019-20 raise is retroactive to July 1, 2019. The 2020-21 raise is retroactive to July 1, 2020. In addition, qualifying employees would receive a one-time “off schedule” increase of 2% for 2020-21, retroactive to July 1, 2020.

Retroactive checks would be issued by June. The off-schedule check would be 2% of an employee’s annual salary from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, and those checks would be issued by the end of September. The ongoing raises would be reflected on paychecks with the new fiscal year starting July 1.

In addition to approving the tentative agreements, TALB members approved memoranda of understanding in the areas of collaborative co-teaching, training and professional development, and support for teachers who are changing assignments.

The school district continues to negotiate with the local chapter of the California School Employees Association and will provide additional updates as more information becomes available.
